Homeowner Testimonial

In this whole home remodel Nip Tuck addressed dark and dated spaces, too small rooms, and low ceilings in creative ways. Four skylights were designed to give the illusion of higher ceilings in the kitchen and primary bath. An extra bedroom was divided up to become a more functional laundry room and a primary closet. And the dark finishes were brightened with white cabinetry, and light colored walls. The homeowners love to entertain, and their previous floor plan didn’t work. By removing a wall between the kitchen and dining nook the flow was dramatically improved. A room divider screen prevented the now very-open plan from feeling like a bowling lane. Nip Tuck modernized the look with more natural light and an easy-breezy California-inspired palette.

Issues

  • Dark and dated kitchen and primary bath

  • Low ceilings

  • Previous updates left the home feeling discombobulated

  • Too much wood: windows, ceiling, cabinets, millwork, doors

  • Floor plan didn’t flow well for large gatherings

Challenges

  • Ceiling and roof construction didn’t allow for removing as many walls as desired

  • Ceiling and roof framing didn’t allow for raising the ceiling height

  • The decision makers preferred different aesthetics

Solutions

  • Created one giant skylight well, with three skylights to give the illusion of a taller ceiling in the kitchen.

  • Determined the favorite parts of previous updates and designed the home to be beautifully modern and respectful of these.

  • Introduced white cabinetry, painted a wood ceiling, lightened the floors to dilute the feeling of too much wood.

  • Removed a dividing wall between the dining/kitchen/nook opening up the entertaining space for a good flow.
