The two most compelling drivers of this project were the husband’s dream of a below-ground 5,000 bottle wine cellar and the family’s need for a comfortable and accessible space for Mom to live when she visited. Included in the project scope were several must-haves, including:

  • A subterranean wine cellar to house 5,000 bottles.

  • An apartment for Mom with sink, small refrigerator, and walk-in shower.

  • A dedicated mudroom.

  • A large laundry room with space for pet supplies.

  • A hangout room for the family to enjoy music and engage in jam sessions.

  • Expanded upstairs bonus room for dedicated gym and crafting space.

  • Covered patio with easy outdoor access for Mom and family entertaining.

The underground wine cellar turned out to be the most challenging element as it required nine-foot ceilings and, for engineering purposes, needed to be located at least ten feet away from the existing home. The solution to offset it from the above music room created a beautiful stamped concrete patio with a trellis for summer evening entertaining. The wine room is finished in walnut and houses well over 5,000 bottles. The music room above is cozy with custom stained millwork and ceiling beams.

Before

Conceptually crafted out of a magazine spread, the new kitchen is a dream come true for the client—an updated twist of classic inset styling of years past. Creamy painted inset cabinetry, stunning quartz countertops, and high-end appliances complete the transformation.

The apartment for Mom, set on the main level, features a small kitchenette with a window to the gardens, a set of French doors leading to a covered patio, and a spacious barrier-free shower.

The new laundry room uses every inch of space to the max, and incudes a full-size, subzero refrigerator and two refrigerator drawers. The laundry machines are raised on built-in pedestals, and the door to the covered patio has a hot/cold water spigot for washing active pups.

The enlarged bonus room on the second floor became a mixed-use area for much-needed storage, teen lounging, and dedicated workout and crafting space.

Nip Tuck’s clients are over the moon, enjoying their new custom space. It has enhanced their experience at home both inside and out. Mom can visit and enjoy her space, the dogs love lounging on covered patios, music night is a weekly event, and the dream of an underground wine room is reality.
