Main Floor Reboot

ENTER THE VIRTUAL TOUR

The homeowners fell in love with the light filled, original charm of their 1923 home but the kitchen was tiny and falling apart. The family loves to entertain but there was no room for people to hang out in the kitchen. There was very little countertop space for prepping food, the cabinets were falling apart, and the storage was not great. The refrigerator sat in the middle of the kitchen and there was no powder room on the main floor.

We got to work figuring out a better layout. The back door opened directly into the basement door and the basement stairs not only cut off the kitchen but were very steep and had an awkward turn. The decision was to relocate both the back door and the basement stairs to create a larger footprint for the kitchen and better access to the basement.

It also made sense to widen the opening between the kitchen and the dining room to create a better flow for entertaining.

Lastly, we removed a hallway between the front door the new back door location to tuck in a powder room. We repainted the old radiators to give them a fresh look and added wainscot to the dining room to add interest. We also added slate tile flooring at the new back door to finish off the new mud room.
